Why are UAB Health System and Ascension St. Vincent’s entering into an alliance?

The primary reason is to deliver the right care in the right setting to improve healthcare for our patients in Birmingham and throughout Alabama. The alliance will also help advance the missions of both UAB Health System and Ascension St. Vincent’s.

Will my UAB doctors be moving to St. Vincent’s or vice-versa?

While the alliance may end up enhancing options for your health care, there are no planned changes to your doctors or other care providers.

Will my insurance still be accepted?

There are no planned changes to insurance coverage.

How will this benefit me or my loved ones?

By partnering together, we are hopeful that both health systems will be able to better accommodate patients. Also, we are hoping that bringing the strengths of both organizations together will provide a more coordinated approach to your care.

Does this impact the new UAB / Cooper Green arrangement?

Cooper Green is a University Health Authority and is not part of the Alliance.

The activities of Cooper Green will be coordinated with UAB and Ascension St. Vincent’s to bring the strengths of this new relationship for the benefit of Cooper Green patients.

Are my UAB and Ascension St. Vincent’s medical records being merged?

At this time, medical records are not being merged. If you need to access your medical records, you may access them from the same patient portals you have previously used.

Will the missions change?

UAB and Ascension St. Vincent’s have agreed that both organizations will maintain their respective missions. Ascension St. Vincent’s remains a ministry of the Catholic Church, and UABHS remains an academic medical center with public, charitable and research functions.

Will Ascension St. Vincent’s continue to follow the Ethical and Religious Directives?  

Ascension St. Vincent’s will continue to follow the Ethical and Religious Directives as a ministry of the Catholic Church.

Will UAB continue to function as a public academic medical center with educational, charitable and research missions??

UAB will continue to function as an academic medical center, public safety-net hospital and research-intensive university.
